Seven young men and women from the Gen. Wood Club competed on November 30th to become the General Wood 2011-12 Youth of the Year. All seven are friends and have fantastic stories about their challenges in life, opportunities that they have taken, and achievements that they have earned. Each of the participating Club members have been involved at General Wood Club in a wide range of ways: volunteering at special events, participating in environmental activities, raising money for children with cancer, helping with everyday tasks inside the Club and being great, positive role models for the younger children of the Club.
As part of the competition, participating youth complete extensive applications, write essays, and present a speech about why they should be chosen as their Club's Youth of the Year.
"This was not an easy choice for the staff to decide who would take the title as we are proud of all of them," said Area Club Director Milo Hinojosa. "We would be excited and honored for any one of them to represent the General Wood Club."
The staff chose Michel Lopez as the General Wood Youth of the Year for 2011-12. Michel will continue to compete against other Youth of the Year from Clubs throughout Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago in early 2012.
Congratulations and best of luck Michel!
